CANICA stands for Centro de Apoyo al Niño de la Calle de Oaxaca (Street Children Advocacy Center in Oaxaca). CANICA is a nonprofit organization established in May 1992, without political or religious affiliation. It offers activities, care and support for children living in the streets of Oaxaca, Mexico.
At this point we have four children participating though CANICA as smile sellers:
Lorena Cuamani Macuil, 12 years
Marisol Cuamani Macuil, 9 years
Francisco Viera Zurita, 11 years
Irvin Ramirez Reyes, 17 years
The organization is part of the official MESE (Minors in Special Situation) program, a result of a research into the situation of street children, conducted in 1991, by UNICEF and DIF Estatal.
